Ostara: pagan sabbath celebrating the spring equinox, when night and day are of equal length
Ostara symbolizes renewal, the return to life after winter , nature awakening with plants blooming and trees budding, animals emerging from hibernation or returning from migration. But it also symbolizes the perfect balance between shadow and light.
It's a time of renewed fertility, both for the Earth and for all living things, humans and animals. It's a time to take action and take care of planting and sowing seeds, but also to embark on new projects. The temperatures are getting milder, making us want to enjoy the outdoors: walk in the forest, spend time in your garden, connect with nature, and enjoy the sunshine.
Origins of the name Ostara
Ostara takes its name from Éostre, a Nordic goddess (and by extension Germanic) of fertility and spring in Scandinavian civilization according to the English monk Bede the Venerable. She is associated with the Vanir and represents life, earth, youth, and dawn. This goddess was worshipped at the beginning of each spring: bells were rung to awaken nature, and the famous "spring cleaning" was performed to drive out bad energies and make way for new ones. As an offering, decorated eggs were offered to Éostre. because they symbolize fertility but also light and balance : yellow symbolizing the Sun God and white Mother Earth, a perfect harmony which gives rise to rebirth. 🌷
There are also several legends concerning the symbolism of the rabbit, which is actually a hare . It is also said to be the favorite animal of the goddess Eostre! 🐇
